Japan’s current Constitution, in effect since 1947, was drafted through both compromise and a desire for national reinvention in the aftermath of war. Nearly eighty years later, it stands increasingly at the center of political debate in deeply uncertain times. This exhibition’s fourth iteration unfolds across two Tokyo galleries, drawing on the contrasting postwar histories of their surrounding neighborhoods to illuminate the gap between constitutional promises and the uneven worlds in which people actually live.
At Mujin-to Production in eastern Tokyo, “Shelter” focuses on resilience amid precarious conditions, asking how people resist erasure and improvise ways of surviving and making a place to live. At Aoyama | Meguro in western Tokyo, “Sweatshop” examines how power disciplines bodies, extracts labor, consumes land, and normalizes hidden violence as stability and comfort.
Moving between these two sites offers a way of reading the Constitution not only through what it has failed to protect, but through those who continue to test its limits and push for greater freedom and rights.
